Have you found your mission?

Jules & Greg are two of our key Table community regulars, whose leadership and care and welcome of others has made a difference. This past summer, they went with a group from the Church of the Incarnation to Honduras as part of a training/preparation program to lead such trips in the future. Jules shared her experiences back in August, but she and Greg will brief our whole church on Sunday at noon. I hope you can plan on being there.

Mission has been an unofficial theme for the Table in this New Year, as we have attempted to move beyond our four walls and into our community. Tonight, a group of us will go and participate with the homeless census and count, starting at City Hall. During Christmas, the Table helped Reconciliation Ministry organize and distribute gifts to families in need. Most of our messages in this New Year have been focused on our call to serve others.

But it’s important to realize that mission is not just something that you go and do in a foreign country, one time a month for a special event, or whatever. It’s what you do each day.

Theologian David Bosch, in his book Transforming Mission, says it this way:

… consequently, the church is called to live the resurrection life in the here and now and to be a sign of contradiction against the forces of death and destruction.

Your job setting is a place to do mission. Your apartment complex. Your home. Your neighborhood. Your gym. Your local pub. Your supermarket. Wherever your day takes you, you will have opportunity to participate in Jesus’ ministry of incarnation in someone else – being God’s love for a stranger, friend, or enemy. Sometimes, that’s handing a thirsty person a drink of water or buying a burger for a hungry neighbor. Sometimes, it’s your presence in a time of need. It might even be words of affirmation to someone who feels beat down by life. It definitely includes using your voice to change systems that are broken in our own community.

Have you discovered your place of mission? Are you opening up to sharing God’s love with those you meet? May this New Year be a time to discover the answers to those questions and hear God’s call afresh.

Homeless Count and Census

The Table and Faith in the City Pub ministry are organizing some folks to join in with the City of Dallas’ annual Homeless Count and Census on January 26. If you are interested, check the flyer below for more information, and then email me if you are interested in joining us. You’ll need to bring warm clothes, a flashlight, and an open mind as we get a better picture on this challenge in our city.

Celebrate Thanksgiving with EDCC

In the next couple of weeks, there are lots of opportunities to use your gifts of time and talent to celebrate this season of Thanksgiving with our whole church family. Please be sure to RSVP to anything that needs a reservation, so we will have a good count of how many people we are preparing for.

1 – Thanks for Giving Sunday, November 20, Noon, Great Hall – We’ll celebrate a successful stewardship campaign by sharing in a big community meal with turkey, veggies, and dessert. This is free, but you do need to RSVP by today. Email Peggy to let her know you are coming.

2 – Community Thanksgiving Procession, November 22, 6:30 PM – This is a great, unique tradition to our part of East Dallas. We begin our worship at St. Edward’s Catholic Church and march to Grace United Methodist. Finally, we end up right here at EDCC for a meal of tamales, eggrolls, and rice. Invite friends. There is always great music and dance from the Matachines dancers of St. Edward’s.

As a bonus, Faith in the City pub ministry will be heading out after the meal for some post worship conversation at an area pub.

3 – Advent Prep, November 26, 9 AM – We gather on the Saturday morning post Thanksgiving to decorate and prepare our church building for our celebration of Advent. We need lots of extra hands to help setup Christmas trees, lights, and other decorations. We will need volunteers for our Table space as well. The work begins at 9 AM. Please plan on helping.

Mark your calendars for these opportunities and help us celebrate this season of Thanksgiving together!

Mike’s Kids

Mike's Kids - supporting Good Samaritan ministries

Last week, we launched our annual toy and food drive called Mike’s Kids. What’s especially cool about this drive is that it is a partnership with other churches across the North Texas area, and the resources we pull together support Good Samaritan Ministries, a refugee outreach organization near Brownsville, TX. We are accepting gently used toys and clothes. Rice, beans, and canned goods are also welcome.

You’ll find boxes all around our church where you can drop off your donations.

Where is Faith in the City tonight?

Faith in the City is a cool pub ministry in East Dallas!

Faith in the City, our Tuesday weekly pub ministry, has been changing locations, exploring what our great neighborhood has to offer. East Dallas has a ton of tasty places – pizza joints, burger spots, barbecue, tacos, southern cuisine, and more. But I know that can all be confusing if you are coming for your first time or trying to find us after being too busy to make it for a couple of weeks. So here’s the good news – we’ll always be posting our monthly calendar up on faithinthecity.com, so you will always know where we are.

Tonight, we’ll be on Greenville at the Bottle Shop. Bob has been raving about this place near his home for a while. It looks like we can order some takeout pizza from Greenville Pizza Company while we are there, which is awesome.

And just to be clear, since I get this questions a lot too – who can come to Faith in the City? Is it just for young adults? Everyone – it’s for everyone! Yes, we are predominantly made up of young adults, and the kind of group we are serves young working professionals well. But anyone of any age is welcome to join the conversation!

If you want to discuss theology, philosophy, life, work, and culture with a bunch of cool, respectful, and humorous people, come join us.

See you tonight!
