Rev. Dr. Sharon Watkins’ Pastoral Letter

Rev. Dr. Sharon Watkins, our General Minister and President of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), released this pastoral letter on the issue of sexuality within the life of the church. I highly recommend watching it. I am thankful for her work as a theologian, trying to make sense of what we are to do as faithful Christians when there is disagreement and division about an issue such as this. The most important thing she does is remind us that we are called to be gracious and welcoming at God’s table, regardless of how we feel or think about particular issues.

As for the Table, we welcome all to our community. We take seriously this idea that it is God’s table that we gather around, not our own. Since we don’t own it, how do we get to decide who can or cannot come? We too are guests.

I recognize though that it can be tough to dine with folks who have bullied or hurt others in the name of God. Our table, no matter the shape or beauty, can feel broken. We aren’t perfect ambassadors. Injustice still abounds in the church and in our world. People are still excluded and hurt. We are on a journey that is not yet complete.

Jesus said this – “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

I believe that bread of life is available for everyone. I believe when we gather around the table, God feeds us regardless of our hateful ideas and our broken pasts. Bit by bit, we move along the arc of justice, slower than a lot of people would like, but forward nonetheless into God’s future where the divine dwells in harmony with all Creation. We can be a witness to wholeness in a divided world. We don’t have to be perfect to be part of the solution.

What is your response to Sharon’s message? Do you find hope or challenge in it?

Micah is getting ordained!

Micah James Ordination

Our youth minister, Rev. Micah James, is getting ordained in a big worship extravaganza on June 2 at 3 pm. Everyone in the Table and broader church community is invited to attend. If you have never been to an ordination service before, it’s truly a unique experience. There will be excellent preaching, great music, and plenty of words of hope. It will be a definite moment of celebration in Micah’s journey. We hope to remind her how much we have appreciated her hard work and the gift it has been to learn together over the past three years.

Mark your calendars and plan to be there!

A Word from Nouwen

I am only human.

Stand by for one of the great movie montage clips of all time – Teen Wolf’s big final basketball game.

I used this in the Table on Sunday as I gave my message as a fun way to look at the disciples’ transformation from imperfect, doubting, struggling, confused, frightened humans to imperfect, doubting, struggling, confused, frightened humans who God is using to do amazing things in the world. I likened it to a montage, the classic film making technique where an unlikely hero through the course of a pop song and a number of different scenes becomes good enough or skilled enough to “win in the end” (also the name of the pop song from Teen Wolf’s clip above). To look at the disciples’ various experiences around and after the crucifixion, it’s hard to believe they are the same people that would later be at the center of that Acts 2 church community that was sharing their possessions, praying together, eating together, and being a witness of God’s kingdom on earth.

I am reminded constantly that I am in the same camp of those disciples – I am not a perfect guy.

But the point of my sermon and of scripture is that it’s not about me getting my act together – it’s about God doing something through me. Peter didn’t suddenly quit screwing up – he kept screwing up long after he had denied Jesus. And even then, God used him for something far greater than he could have ever accomplished by himself.

This is a reminder to us that our faith is not a path to perfection but maybe a path of graceful surprises.

A few odds and endseven as I got sick this week, it was fascinating to see the reaction and storm following Osama Bin Laden’s death at the hands of US Special Forces. I continue to pray for peace. Also, I highly recommend Rev. Micah James response, both prophetic and pastoral, to this world event.

The Ironies of Palm Sunday

A Donkey Rests After Carrying the King of KingsHoly Week is here, folks.

It may feel like it’s a little late. It may feel like it’s early. Regardless, it’s here.

Are you ready?

I am going to be making an effort to post something everyday of the week during Holy Week, tracing the journey as a community, as a Christian, and even as a bystander to all the busy-ness of life during this time. Some of it will be thought-provoking. Some of it will be funny. (And some likely stupid…)

Thinking ahead, Palm Sunday is one of those real difficult days in the life of the church. Yes, we shout “Hosannas” and wave palm branches. It seems like a happy day, that precursor to the party that is Easter. But, really, Palm Sunday is a precursor to the storm that is Holy Week. It’s filled with bitter irony, like the same crowd that shouts “Hosanna” to Jesus is the same crowd that shouts “Crucify him” later in the week.

Eugene Cho wrote a blog post back in 2009 about the irony of Palm Sunday:

The image of Palm Sunday is one of the greatest ironies.  Jesus Christ – the Lord of Lords, King of Kings, the Morning Star, the Savior of all Humanity, and we can list descriptives after descriptives – rides into a procession of “Hosanna, Hosanna…Hosanna in the Highest” - on a donkey – aka - an ass.

He goes on to say it’s like his friend Shane Claiborne once said, “that a modern equivalent of such an incredulous image is of the most powerful person in our modern world, the United States President, riding into a procession…on a unicycle.”

Such an image is indicative of the rollercoaster ride that is Holy Week in the Christian faith – from perceived victory to utter defeat to transcendant eucatastrophe.

Hey, maybe you need some irony in your life. Travel with us – our journey begins Sunday.
