The Theology of Willie Nelson

I’m excited to announce our big pub night for this month – the Theology of Willie Nelson. Our guest is Dr. Bob Shelton, former president of Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, who will be sharing stories of Willie, music, and spirituality from his time living in Austin. Bob is an awesome guy and may answer some of our questions about faith and culture.

Heads up – this will be my last pub night with our wonderful group as my family and I head off to beautiful Washington DC. So, let’s make it a good one.

Also, shout out to talented artist, Anna Bleker, for her image on the little informal flyer above.

Faith in the City @ Zini’s in Deep Ellum

Zini's Pizza

I’ve updated the Faith in the City pub ministry site with locations for the next several weeks.

Tomorrow, the crew hits Zini’s in Deep Ellum (2639-C Elm St, Dallas, TX) at 7:30 pm. We’ll share pizza and conversation. From what I hear, the group will gather in the loft, so head on upstairs once you get there. There should be free parking in the neighborhood, but watch out for the pay spaces. They will boot your car.

The topic from Banned Questions about Jesus is this interesting one – “Did Jesus study other religions? Which ones?”

While I doubt Jesus took a comparative religious studies course in school, this question challenges us to look back at Jesus’ historic setting. What other religions were active? Did these influence Jesus in anyway? For example, Phil Snider points out that the presence and practice of Zoroastrianism in Jesus’ time. More significantly, it was the Roman Empire’s system of gods and emperor worship that Jesus no doubt had to respond to throughout his ministry.

Less likely, Jesus’ trip to India as detailed in the great book, Lamb.

Rev. Douglass Anne will lead the conversation tomorrow night, and she has some great insights to get things started.

See you then!

Faith in the City is at Pizza Lounge tonight!

Pizza Lounge pizza is so good

I know it’s lunch time, but go ahead and make dinner plans by feasting your eyes upon that delicious pizza above.

It’s a Pizza Lounge pie, and darn, it’s good stuff.

We’ll get the conversation and food going around 7:30 PM at 841 Exposition Ave, right across from the Fair Park DART station. I heartily recommend their delicious “dimebag” pizza with all kinds of green vegetables, but on occasion, we enjoy their happy goat or spicy muchaco. Oh, it’s also half price pizza night as a bonus.

The question for tonight is this – “Was Jesus ever wrong? About what?”

My first inclination is to point at the story of the Syrophoenician woman in Mark 7:25-30, where Jesus seems rude to a Gentile woman in need. I can’t read that passage without thinking Jesus was wrong. But I also can’t read it without thinking that Jesus had the capacity to see things in a different light and change his mind.

If Jesus was fully human, doesn’t that mean he could be wrong about something?

Sometimes, folks who follow Jesus are called to be perfect, as Christ is perfect. But, being wrong is really about being human, the process by which we learn and grow. If Jesus never learned anything, then how is that any sort of model for us to follow? Is that any sort of teacher that we can relate to? What do you think?

Join our conversation tonight – I’m sure it will be as wide-ranging as it was last week.

Back at Bryan Street

Bryan Street Tavern

Faith in the City is back at Bryan Street Tavern tonight, kicking off our conversation to close out the summer. We’ll meet around 7:30 pm to order drinks and food and begin our conversation. Anyone is welcome to join, wherever you are on a journey of faith. You can always find a taste of who we are at our website, clicking the the link at the start of this paragraph.

I think we will firm up some new locations to try out for the fall as well, venturing over into Deep Ellum.

See you tonight!

Stackhouse Burgers

Faith in the City is a cool pub ministry in East Dallas!

The pub is at Stackhouse Burgers tonight. If you like great salads, awesome burgers, and delicious homemade potato chips, check them out with us. We’ll kick off our discussion around 7:45 PM tonight, reflecting on the past week’s terrible events in Colorado and what it means to be a hopeful person in our world of violence and chaos. I hope you can join us, wherever you are in your understanding of religion and spirituality.

Check out the Faith in the City website for other details.
